Islamabad:

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan claimed that there has been a change in the behavior of former Pakistan army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa after he was given an extension as army chief in 2019, The News International reported.

Speaking in an interview with a private channel, the former prime minister said, “General Bajwa turned around after the expansion and settled with Sharif. He, at that time, decided to give him the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).”

Mr Khan also claimed that Gen Bajwa appointed Hussain Haqqani as Pakistan’s then ambassador to the United States and said Mr Haqqani joined the office through the Foreign Office without notice.

“They met Haqqani in Dubai and hired him in September 2021,” Khan said.

According to The News International, Khan said that the former diplomat started lobbying against him in the United States and promoted Gen (retd) Bajwa.

The ousted prime minister, who left office after a no-confidence motion last spring, added the alleged cipher by US diplomat Donald Lu, which Mr Khan claimed was part of a plot to topple his government, This was the result of lobbying in America. ,

Khan said, “General Bajwa repeatedly asked us to focus on the economy and forget about accountability.”

Speaking about the assassination attempt on him, Mr Khan alleged that he knew that Prime Minister Shahbaz Shahbaz, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and a senior official had planned the attack.

Speaking on the names proposed for the interim chief minister in Punjab, Mr Khan said his party and allies in the province have given credible names for the post. He also criticized the candidates nominated by the opposition, claiming that one is the frontman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Zardari, while the other is that of Shehbaz Sharif, The News International reported.

The PTI chairman insisted, “One name was involved in regime change against us. If the Election Commission appoints such a person, we will not accept it.”

Although the caretaker chief minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has taken oath, the opposition and the government in Punjab are still confused about the appointment. As a result of the controversy, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will now decide the matter.

Commenting on Sindh’s problems, Khan said the situation in the province was “worst” across the country. “The corruption of PPP has ruined Sindh,” he said.

The former PM termed the people of Sindh and Karachi as the most oppressed given the condition of the city and the delay in its progress. According to The News International, Mr Khan said he knew he had to go to Karachi.
