A Congress MP from Assam first congratulated Argentine football star Lionel Messi after his FIFA World Cup win against France yesterday and then praised the 35-year-old footballer for his ‘Assam connection’.

Congress MP Abdul Khaliq tweeted, “Congratulations from the bottom of our hearts. We are proud of you for your Assam connection.”

Shocked by the MP’s claim, a Twitter user Aditya Sharma questioned him. “Assam Connection?” Mr Sharma tweeted.

The Congress leader replied, “Yes, he was born in Assam.”

The MP deleted the tweet after it was fact-checked by more Twitter users. Mr Khaliq asked people to check their social media handles and not spread rumours.

He tweeted, “Before spreading rumours, I request everyone to check the timeline of my Twitter handle and official Facebook page.”

However, by then many people had taken screenshots of the tweet.

The Congress MP’s original tweet, to which Mr Sharma puzzledly asked questions about Lionel Messi’s “Assam connection”, was “deleted by tweet author”, says a message that now appears instead of the tweet.
