Blood transfusion is a process of providing blood to a person or patient who has lost blood due to injury or surgery. Blood transfusion is also a routine procedure that is followed for individuals who face blood loss due to certain medical conditions. According to a study published by the United States National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), “Generally, RBC (red blood cell) transfusions are performed with the intention of increasing arterial oxygen content and thus oxygen delivery to tissues. “

According to Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant-Internal Medicine at Global Hospital, Mumbai, all kinds of tests are done to ensure the compatibility of the transfused blood, to be transfusion, reports The Indian Express. During a transfusion, a needle is inserted into a vein in a person’s arm through which blood is drawn. The medical staff oversees all critical situations while the transfusion is taking place. The Indian Express quoted Dr Aggarwal as saying, “It takes up to 4 hours to complete a transfusion, in an emergency, it can be transfused at a high speed too.”

Experts also warn that blood transfusions can have negative effects if the blood is not compatible with the recipient. In such cases the recipient’s body produces antibodies that destroy the donor’s blood cells and this leads to a transfusion reaction. It can cause rashes, itching, and fever, or in severe cases, can cause injury to the lungs or kidneys.

In some cases human errors during blood transfusion can also have serious consequences for the blood recipients. Human error can be avoided by proper testing for the correct match between donor and recipient blood groups prior to transfusion. Correct labeling of transfused blood in storage can also help prevent such errors.
