Hindalco signs MoU with Israeli firm, IOC JV to work towards decarbonizing mobility

Aditya Birla Group’s Hindalco Industries Ltd. said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Israel-based metal-air battery technology company Phinergy and IOC Phinergy Pvt Ltd (IOP), a joint venture for the development of Phinergy and Indian Oil Corporation. is enterprise. of aluminum-air batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage.

Hindalco said in a statement that as per the MoU, Phinergy and IOP will exclusively partner with Hindalco in India on research and development for aluminum-air batteries and pilot production of aluminum plates and recycling of aluminum.

In an aluminum-air battery developed by Finergy, energy is released when aluminum reacts with oxygen in the ambient air to produce hydroxide.

Due to its light weight and high energy density, an aluminum-air battery greatly extends the driving range of electric vehicles.

It also enables quick ‘refueling’ and eliminates the need for an expensive nationwide charging network.

“The aluminum-air battery is expected to further facilitate EV adoption and accelerate the transition to zero-emission mobility,” Hindalco said.

An additional advantage is that the aluminum hydroxide in the battery can be recycled to recover the aluminum. It added that leading automobile manufacturers in India are currently testing the technology.

Satish Pai, MD, Hindalco Industries Ltd. said, “Climate action is an integral part of our business and our partnership with Phynergy and IOP is an important step towards reducing dynamism.”

“The partnership is also a testament to Hindalco’s globally recognized capabilities in innovation and R&D and we are delighted to contribute to the development of aluminum-air batteries. India is rich in aluminum resources and this technology can help enhance the country’s energy and resource security.”

David Meyer, CEO, Phinergy, said, “Phinergy strongly believes that aluminum-air batteries will contribute to the clean energy revolution in India. The partnership is a major step forward in the deployment of aluminum-air batteries in India and we are confident that this collaboration will help India to achieve the best possible results in the next generation.” Will significantly enhance the development of an ecosystem capable of supplying “aluminum as energy” made in the U.S.

“IOP was incorporated with the objective of commercializing and manufacturing aluminum-wind power systems in India to strengthen India’s energy security,” said IOP President Sanjeev Gupta.

“This partnership with Hindalco is a major step towards catalyzing our efforts to develop a conducive ecosystem for the rapid proliferation of aluminum-air battery technology. The collaboration will further India’s aspirational journey towards sustainable, affordable and secure energy options for sustainable and e-mobility objectives.”
