Hope to start Hockey World Cup in Odisha: Abhishek

The next few months will be very important for the Indian men’s hockey team preparing for home World Cup when the FIH Hockey World Cup 2023 arrives in the city in January.

Among those with a keen eye on the big stage is young Abhishek, who, if selected, will have the honor of making his senior World Cup debut at home.

“I haven’t played at a high level like the World Cup before, and I know there will be many fans, who will provide us a lot of support at our home ground. I hope I can make my World Cup debut in January and I hope it becomes a happy memory as well.

“It will be a lot of fun at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2023 in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. The crowd is fantastic, and I look forward to experiencing it,” Abhishek said in an official release.

Young forward Abhishek got his first taste of success with the Indian men’s hockey team when he won a silver medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

“It was my first medal in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games senior team. After getting the medal, my relatives and neighbors all came to visit my house and family. The media also came, which made my family very happy. I loved winning my first medal in my first tournament,” recalled Abhishek.

Calm and occupied, Abhishek is also candid about his ambitions and the check boxes he keeps on his to-do list. The next is cementing his place in the Indian men’s hockey team, and then ensuring selection for the big day in January.

“From the beginning, when I was called up for the national team, all I wanted to do was make it into the core group of the team. I wanted to get set in the team and gradually I tried each and every one to make an impact on the team. Started targeting the tournament. Initially I just wanted to be in the 33 man squad. Now all I have to hope is to make it to the final squad for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023.

Abhishek, who hopes that India The FIH World Cup could end on the podium in 2023, explained that fitness and strength are among the most important factors to ensure a successful career at the highest level in the sport.

Ahead of a possible World Cup debut in January, he has a chance to crank things up a bit in the 2022-23 FIH Men’s Hockey Pro League, when India host New Zealand and Spain for a total of six matches in Bhubaneswar.

“The team is preparing well for the 2022-23 FIH Hockey Men’s Pro League. Most things are focused on fitness and finishing before the matches against New Zealand and Spain.

The Indian men’s hockey team has drawn England, Wales and Spain as their opponents in Group D of the upcoming FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 in Bhubaneswar-Rourkela. The tournament will be played from January 13 to January 29, 2023.
