Hyderabad on May 7 will see the third edition of Hyderabad Cycling Revolution (HCR), an initiative to spread awareness about active mobility which involves walking, running, cycling or using public transport.

So, what is active mobility? Hyderabad’s bicycle Mayor Santhana Selvan believes that it is a long-term sustainable sustainable transport solution for Hyderabad. The Active Mobility Formula lists options such as walking, cycling or public transport as modes of commuting. According to the formula, walk if the distance is less than one kilometer, cycle if the distance is more than one kilometer but less than five kilometers and use public transport (bus/metro) if the distance is more than five kilometers.

Selvan informed that more than 5000 participants will leave their homes at 6 am to cycle, run, walk or assemble in a bus or metro at the Parade Ground in Secunderabad.

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation and Hyderabad Metro Rail collaborated for the event, which was preceded by a two-month-long fast-track campaign where over 500 volunteers reached out to schools, colleges and companies. “Our sole aim is to create and promote awareness about active mobility and how a small lifestyle change can make a big difference,” says Selvan, who interacts with the sales force staff at Gachibowli for HCR.

“If proactive mobility resonates with the decision makers and we bring about small changes individually, things can definitely change. It is the solution to the urban problems of pollution and traffic health. Selvan has the opinion.

An extensive cycle lane network across the city, well-connected footpaths, public transport and bicycle parking at metro stations are measures that support active mobility, which Selvan says is a step in the right direction for cities. “Delhi and Bengaluru are already grappling with the problem of pollution and traffic. Hyderabad is growing very fast and we need to act fast before it is too late.

Hyderabad Metro has already started announcing the HCR 3.0 program at its stations. “Participants forming a human chain to represent the letters of HCR, and active mobility pledge are also part of the programme. “We are only asking people to make a small, smart choice to replace at least 50 percent of their transportation needs with active mobility.”
