Visitors to the newly inaugurated Kartavya Path will soon be able to taste frozen desserts at six dedicated vending zones as the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has issued ice cream trolley business licenses to 90 vendors.

The iconic section’s opening weekend saw many visitors sneak in ice cream bars to the revamped lawns of India Gate from vendors stationed on adjoining main streets. Many vendors were turned away by traffic police officials due to the crowd around the vehicles.

Mahesh Sharma, a resident of East Delhi, who was on his way to Kartavya Path with his family, acceded to his seven-year-old son’s demands and bought some ice cream bars off the main road despite the ban on eating on the lawn. “Even I was excited to have some ice cream on the lawn. We carefully polished our bars without making a mess. It was a fun experience,” said Mr. Sharma, as he wiped a speck of chocolate cream off his son’s chin.

15 trains in each zone

According to the NDMC, 15 ice cream cart vendors will operate from each vending zone – south of C-Hexagon Road, north of C-Hexagon Road, south (both sides) of Man Singh Road, south of Rafi Ahmed Road and north of Rafi Ahmed road.

“Ice cream cart vendors will soon start functioning from designated locations. We have asked for certain details about the sellers like their local and permanent address and Aadhaar number. This process will be completed soon,” said an NDMC official.

NDMC vice-president Satish Upadhyay (BJP) said a total of 30 water kiosks will also be visible in the vending zones on the renovated section – five per zone.

The civic body has also asked the District Magistrate (New Delhi) to ensure deployment of civil defense volunteers to monitor and enforce restrictions in the area.

According to a list released by the District Civil Defense Office (New Delhi), a total of 36 civil defense volunteers will be deployed in different shifts.

“Volunteers will monitor that people do not enter the reservoirs. Along with this, they will also monitor that the vendors do not throw garbage at their designated places. Eating is not allowed in the lawns and volunteers will monitor it,” Mr Upadhyay said.

The iconic section from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate – which was renamed from Rajpath to Kartavya Path – was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week.
