Indian Institute technology (IIT) Hyderabad has collaborated with DRDO to set up the DRDO Industry Academy (DIA) Center of Excellence. DIA COE will work on manufacturing ultra high temperature materials for hypersonic vehicles, artificial intelligence for missile and missile defence, technologies for space applications, adaptive imaging and image processing, nanoornithocopter technologies, seeker and homing technologies and additive.
“The presently approved DIA CoE will take this initiative to a higher level and enable IITH, DRDO and industry to contribute to nation building,” the university said. DRDO cell was established in 2020-21 at IIT Hyderabad, working as satellite center for RIC Chennai (IIT Madras Research Park). The then Director of RIC, Dr Natarajan took the initiative to approach various defense laboratories in and around Hyderabad, collate problem statements and share them among the IITH faculty members through the then Dean (R&D) Professor Sumohana, IITH .

Subsequently, the IITH faculty and several DRDO scientists came together to draft proposals to meet the exact requirement of defence, and submitted several proposals in various fields ranging from additive manufacturing to sensor design, artificial intelligence to space technology. were made, and 13 proposals worth several crores were approved, the institute said.
