Happy Independence Day 2022: India Will celebrate 76th Independence Day on 15th August and Prime Minister Narendra Modi Will hoist the national flag at Red Fort in Delhi and address the nation. Every year the Prime Minister of India hoists the tricolor at the Red Fort and since 1947 it has become an integral part of the Independence Day celebrations.

Significance of the Prime Minister hoisting the National Flag at the Red Fort

When India gained independence, the country’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, commemorated the historic moment by hoisting the national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort and delivering the speech “India’s striving with destiny”.

The sprawling 17th-century monument complex served as the main palace of the Mughal Empire until 1857 before the overthrow of Bahadur Shah Zafar by the British. The British then demolished more than two-thirds of the interior of the Red Fort and converted this section into a garrison quarter.

The famous Revolt of 1857 may be noted as one of the reasons why the monument became the site of the flag hoisting as it temporarily lost control to British power in parts of India. The Red Fort and its occupant Bahadur Shah Zafar became the main symbol of the rebellion.

Hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort became a custom after Prime Minister Nehru. Since then every prime minister has done so to pay tribute to freedom fighters and to honor their martyrdom. Ceremonies at the fort include a guard of honour, hoisting of the national flag, 21-gun salute and singing of the national anthem for the Prime Minister by the armed forces and Delhi Police. Traditionally, the event ends with the release of tricolor balloons.
