Passenger train services between India and Bangladesh resumed on Sunday after a gap of two years as the Bandhan Express flagged off from Kolkata station on its way to Khulna in the neighboring country, an Eastern Railway (ER) official said here. was shown off.

He said the Maitree Express is scheduled to resume services between Kolkata and Dhaka on Sunday and will travel to the Bangladesh capital on Monday morning on its maiden journey from here from March 2020.

ER spokesperson Eklavya Chakraborty said, “Passenger train services between India and Bangladesh, which were halted for more than two years due to the pandemic, resumed with the flagging off of Bandhan Express from Kolkata station at 7.10 am. “

While the Bandhan Express runs twice a week between Kolkata and Khulna, the Maitree Express connecting Kolkata with the Bangladesh capital is a five-day service.

Mr Chakraborty told PTI that people on both sides of the border are excited about the resumption of train services, which are fully booked for the next few days. “Because of the convenience and convenient schedule of train travel as well as being economical, people prefer this mode of transport like bus and air,” he said.

He said the trains have a capacity of around 450 passengers and have air-conditioned chair car and executive class categories.

Chakraborty said India-Bangladesh train connectivity through West Bengal will get another boost from June 1 with the inauguration of Mithali Express between New Jalpaiguri and Dhaka.

He said the new service would also boost tourism in northern West Bengal as many travelers from Bangladesh show keen interest in exploring the Dooars forests and tea gardens in the Darjeeling hills and foothills.
