Initial investigation into Al Jazeera journalist’s death is inconclusive, Israel says

The Israeli military has said that its initial investigation into the reporter’s killing was unable to determine whether he was killed by Israeli or Palestinian gunfire.

In a statement released on Friday, when Shirin Abu Aqleh was to be buried in Jerusalem, the military said it was unable to determine who fired the fatal shot during a military raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin two days ago.

It said Palestinian gunmen were active in the area and fired repeatedly and recklessly towards an Israeli military vehicle 200 meters (yards) from where it was hit, and Israeli troops retaliated.

Palestinian journalists accompanying Abu Akleh at the time said there were no Palestinian gunmen or conflict in the immediate area.

“The conclusion of the interim investigation is that it is not possible to trace the source of the fire that struck and killed the reporter,” the military says.
