International Day 2021 to Preserve the Ozone Layer: 5 easy ways to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle

In Antarctica, scientists detected a dramatic drop in ozone concentrations in the spring of 1975; Which reached a turning point by 1987. It was found that there are man-made ozone-depleting substances (ODS) which are proving to be dangerous for the layer and thus leading to its destruction. As we all know that the presence of ozone is absolutely necessary to protect life on this planet, steps should be taken to create more eco-friendly environment for its sustenance.

A multilateral environmental agreement (which regulates the production and consumption of about 100 man-made ODS) was introduced as an initiative towards restoring the ozone layer. Thus, World Ozone Day celebrated on 16 September marks the anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

Ahead of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, here are some tips you can use to be more eco-friendly:

Go local, go green: encourage the use of natural, organic and eco-friendly items

Opt for locally available items instead of products brought in from far away or foreign places. Be it food or clothing, the closer they are to home, the better for the environment. Consuming local produce is best for the body, mind, external environment and economy as well. This is because it will save the hassle of transportation and cut carbon emissions in the process. Organic products are definitely sustainable and eco-friendly.

Energy efficient appliances

Invest in eco-friendly technologies as they are energy efficient. Buy non-ozone-depleting options. For air conditioning and refrigeration applications such as HCFC-22 can be replaced with HFC-410A, and CFC-12 can be replaced with HFC-134a. Use LED light bulbs instead of traditional bulbs. Since LED bulbs are energy efficient, it will ensure a better way to save electricity and prove to be eco-friendly in the process.

change your cleaning products

Avoid synthetic, chemical-rich cleaning products and choose eco-friendly products. Buy household and personal aerosol products (paint sprays, insecticides) that use hydrocarbons (propane, butane) as propellants instead of HCFCs or CFCs.

Fertilizer

Making compost Do your part in reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfills every day. Do not dump your kitchen-waste but start composting them. In this way you can prevent the build-up of methane gas. It is an economical solution to recycle your waste in an eco-friendly way.

reduce, recycle, reuse

Avoid using single-use plastics commonly used for plastic packaging of items such as groceries, food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups and cutlery. Anything like using your own refillable water bottle and using jute bags for groceries can make a big impact in saving the environment.

If individuals take the responsibility of performing the above mentioned activities responsibly, then only we can make a significant difference towards creating a sustainable environment.
