A 144-run partnership between Mitchell Marsh (89) and David Warner (52*) helped Delhi Capitals register an eight-wicket win against Rajasthan Royals at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday. It was a memorable day for DC, who played an all-rounder to keep their playoff hopes alive. With this win, DC are currently at the fifth position in the points table with 12 points. RR is at the third position with 14 points.
Chasing 161, Delhi Capitals had a poor start, losing opener Srikar Bharat for a duck on the second ball of the innings when a Trent Boult delivery found the edge of his bat and fell into the hands of wicketkeeper Sanju Samson. It fielded Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh along with his compatriot David Warner. Famous Krishna bowled the first second over and conceded only 4 runs in the next bolt over, leaving Delhi struggling at 5/1 in three overs.
Things started to escalate once it started with spin Ravichandran Ashwin In the fourth over, who conceded 12 runs thanks to Marsh’s six. In the fourth, fifth and sixth overs, Marsh and Warner stabilized the innings with 11, 12 and 10 runs respectively. Marsh took a more aggressive stance while Warner anchored from the end. At the end of the Powerplay, DC stood at 38/1 with Marsh (24*) and Warner (11*) at sub-par.
After the powerplay, Marsh chased pacer Kuldeep Sen into next gear in his seventh over with two sixes and a total of 16 runs. This also led to a fifty-run partnership between the pair of Warner and Marsh, with the latter being a more impressive batsman. Both the batsmen continued to collect runs. By the end of ten overs, DC had recovered from the initial hiccups and stood on a solid 74/1 with Marsh (47*) and Warner (23*) standing. Soon, Marsh also completed his half-century, his first half-century of the season in 38 balls with a six off Chahal in the 11th over.
The attack on the RR bowling attack did not stop even in the second half of the innings, with the pair all out against Yuzvendra Chahal, Ashwin and Pramukh Krishna. In the 14th over, a boundary by Warner off Sen’s third ball shared a 100-run partnership between him and Marsh in just 79 balls. By the end of 15 overs, DC were in commanding position in the match with 114/1 and Marsh (70*) and Warner (38*) stood at the crease with 47 runs in the last five overs to match.
Marsh and Warner continued to make light work of the RR bowling attack, both scoring 15 runs in the 16th over bowled by Ashwin. In the 18th over of the game, Chahal got the wicket of Marsh, who scored 89 runs in 67 balls and was caught by Sen at short fine leg. This brought skipper Rishabh Pant to the crease, who hit two sixes in Chahal’s 18th over to take Delhi close to a three-run victory. Warner completed the formalities by scoring three runs in the first ball of the 19th over. It also marked his fifth half-century of the season.
Earlier, top innings from Ravichandran Ashwin and Devdutt Padikkal provided Rajasthan Royals a total of 160/6 at the end of the first innings against Delhi Capitals at the Dr DY Patil Stadium here on Wednesday. Ashwin scored 50 runs in 38 balls, while Padikkal scored 48 runs in 30 balls to give a strong hand to Rajasthan in the first innings. Chetan Sakaria, Enrique Nortje and Mitchell Marsh took two wickets each for DC. Rajasthan got off to a poor start and their opener Jos Buttler fell victim to Chetan Sakariya scoring just 7 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin was promoted to number three to join hands with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal to move up the scoreboard. Both shared a great partnership and took their team’s total to 50 runs in the 8th over of the innings.
In the 9th over, Mitchell Marsh gave a big blow to RR and dismissed Jaiswal for 19 runs. Jaiswal’s wicket invited Devdutt Padikkal to the crease and the latter dismissed Mitchell Marsh for 8. Ashwin completed his maiden half-century in just 37 balls, while Padikkal from the other end gave him a strong stand. He took Rajasthan’s score to 107/2 in 14 overs.
Mitchell Marsh was brought back into the attack and the pacer gave his team a major breakthrough as well-established batsman Ashwin was dismissed for 50. RR captain Sanju Samson joined Padikkal at the crease to score big and move up his team’s scoreboard. Padikkal dodges the DC bowlers around the field. The RR captain could not stand the ground for long and fell victim to Enrique Nortje scoring only six runs.
Young batsman Riyan Parag came to the crease to stabilize his team’s batting order. Nortje was bundled out for 14 runs in an over by the pair of Parag and Padikkal. Chetan Sakariya was brought back into the bowling attack in the 17th over of the innings and he delivered a wonderful 7-run spell with the wicket of Riyan Parag. Rasi van der Dussen then joined Padikkal at the crease to take some pressure off the team. Padikkal fell victim to Nortje after scoring 48 runs in the 19th over, taking the team’s total to 146/6. DC restricted Rajasthan to 160/6 in the 20th over of the innings by Shardul Thakur.
