IPL 2023 Final: Shubman Gill is not the crowned prince, he has already become the king, says Aakash Chopra

By India Today Sports Desk: Aakash Chopra has claimed that Shubman Gill isn’t the crown prince but the king of Indian cricket after his record-breaking campaign in IPL 2023.

Gill has enjoyed his most prolific season in the IPL this year, as he has scored 851 runs in 16 matches at an average of 60.79. He has scored three hundreds and four fifties in IPL 2023. All of his three tons had come in his last four games.

His last century came in the crucial IPL 2023 Qualifier Two, where he scored 129 off just 60 balls and captured the Orange Cap for the season from RCB skipper Faf du Plessis.

Speaking ahead of the IPL 2023 final on Sunday, as quoted by Crictracker, Chopra said that Gill is batting differently and has already become the king of Indian cricket.

“This guy (Gill) is batting differently. He is not the crowned prince, he has already become the king. Can he break Kohli’s 900-plus season’s record? He will have to again score 122 runs for that. He has struck three centuries in his last four innings,” said Chopra.

Chopra also commented on whether Gill can go on to break Kohli’s record for most runs in an IPL season. The RCB star had set the record back in 2016, when he scored 973 runs.

Chopra said that the only threat to Gill from reaching the landmark would be CSK’s Deepak Chahar. The former cricketer said that if the GT opener could negotiate the new ball at the start, then he could go on to hit the required 122 runs.

“The only problem that he has is the law of averages. Other than that, no one can stop this guy. If he can manage the new ball at the start, which he can do, Deepak Chahar is the only threat, but if he manages him, this player will hit again. He is an extremely mighty player,”
