Is it safe to use a loofah in the shower?

Dead skin cells also remain, and remain on the loofah you use, and can get tangled up in the many layers of the loofah, and never really get washed off or cleaned

If you want to use a loofah, you need to make sure that it is cleaned thoroughly after every use.

We all have used plastic loofahs during our shower to get that luxurious, sudsy feeling while showering with shower gel or body wash. However, loofahs are honestly not the best option.

“Yes, using a loofah will exfoliate your skin, and get rid of the dead skin cells that usually reside on your epidermis. However, you can end up scrubbing too hard, and may even damage the epidermis, thus causing friction and irritation as well as redness on the skin. Over time, they can even damage your skin,” says Dr. Manasi Shirolikar, Consultant Dermatologist, MBBS, DDVL.

Dead skin cells also remain, and remain on the loofah you use, and can get tangled up in the many layers of the loofah, and never really get washed off or cleaned.

Bathrooms are a moist environment. While showering, the water vapor turns into moisture which is left behind. “Luffa, in such an environment, the presence of dead skin cells as well as dirt, oil and dust from the body can attract mold onto it, and thus become a breeding ground for all kinds of infections, including E. coli. Also, if this loofah is used somewhere on a fresh wound or open cut, the chances of infection are high,” says Dr. Shirolikar.

If you want to use a loofah, you need to make sure that it is cleaned thoroughly after every use. “Wring it dry, and put it in a cool, dry place outside your bathroom so it can dry properly. You can also use an extra dry cloth to wipe away excess moisture, but don’t store it in your bathroom.” Do it,” said Dr. Shirolikar.

Once a week, clean it with either diluted bleach or vinegar, and rinse thoroughly with cold water. Also, make sure you change your loofah every 4 weeks.

Don’t over-rub your body with the loofah, and make sure you avoid using it on or near your genitals and perineum. “Also, if you’ve just shaved your skin, avoid using a loofah at all costs, as your skin’s barrier is compromised at this point, and more susceptible to infection,” Dr. Shirolikar warns.

Finally, you can consider using products like silicone bath scrubbers, or washcloths in place of the loofah, but they also need to be cleaned thoroughly after each use.
