S Nijalingappa first CM
After Mysuru attained status as a state in 1956, S Nijalingappa became the first state employee. He was a Lingayat and took oath twice as CM. After marrying Indira Gandhi, Nijalingappa distanced himself from active politics. Saying this, he said that I have two eyes – Ramakrishna Hegde and Virendra Patil. Ramakrishna Hegde broke away from the Congress and joined the Janata Parivar. Since Nijalingappa reposed faith in him, the Lingayats bonded with Ramakrishna Hegde. Hegde became CM even after being a Brahmin.

Loyalty towards Virendra Patil as well
In the early eighties, the Lingayats reposed faith in Ramakrishna Hegde. The Lingayats shifted their political allegiance to Virendra Patil when they felt that the Janata Dal was failing to provide a stable government to the state. Patil brought the Congress to power in 1989. But Virendra Patil was removed from the candidate post by Rajiv Gandhi at the airport itself and after that the Lingayats turned away from the Congress. Ramakrishna Hegde once again became the leader of the Lingayats. Lingayats remained with Hegde even after he broke away from the Janata Dal and joined the Janata Dal United. It was because of Hegde that the Bharatiya Janata Party got the votes of Lingayats in the Lok Sabha elections and the Atal Bihari Tag government was formed at the center.

Revenge from BJP’s defeat
After the death of Ramakrishna Hegde, the Lingayats elected BS Yeddyurappa as their leader and came to power in 2008. When Yeddyurappa was removed as Chief Minister in Karnataka, the Lingayats took their revenge for the BJP’s defeat in the 2013 assembly elections. Yediyurappa has a strong support base in the Lingayat community.

Kittur Karnataka region is Lingayat dominated region, 50 MLAs are again formed from here. CM Bommai also comes from the account. Apart from these, many elderly leaders are also coming from here. The region consists of 7 districts, including Bagalkot, Dharwad, Vijayapura, Belagavi, Haveri, Gadag and Uttara Kannada.

Big leaders of Lingayat community
Currently, the tallest leader from the Lingayat community is BS Yeddyurappa. Apart from this, the current Basavaraj Bommai also comes from this community. Veteran leader Jagadish Shetty also belongs to the Lingayat community. At the same time, HD Thammaiah and KS Kiran Kumar are also among the big leaders of Lingayat.
