Karnataka government decides to close schools in Bengaluru, imposes weekend curfew

The Karnataka government on Tuesday decided to impose weekend curfew and extend the night curfew in Bengaluru for two weeks in view of the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases. The government also decided to close schools and pre-university colleges for two weeks except for students of class 10th and 12th. “We have decided that schools will remain closed for the rest of the classes in Bengaluru, except for classes 10th and 12th. These COVID rules will come into effect from Wednesday night,” Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashok told reporters.

Ashok said there would be a weekend curfew for two weeks from 10 pm on Friday to 5 am on Monday. He said that all essential services will continue. In addition, the government announced the extension of the night curfew for two weeks, which ends on January 7.

The minister also said that weddings in open spaces should not have a crowd of more than 200 people and marriage halls should not have more than 100 people. Pubs, bars, cinema halls and malls should also have 50 per cent occupancy and those working and visiting these places should have taken both jabs of the COVID vaccine. Also, the government decided to make a negative RT-PCR test report mandatory for those coming into the state from Maharashtra, Kerala and Goa, the minister said.

Government offices will have to follow the guidelines of the Government of India, he explained. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, which was attended by senior ministers including Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar, Ashok and Higher Education Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan, medical experts and senior officials. The meeting was held in view of the sudden spurt in COVID cases in the state. Karnataka recorded 2,479 cases and four deaths on Tuesday. Since January 1, the city is reporting over 1,000 cases daily.
