Karnataka students prove that bamboo can replace steel as building material for homes

These bamboo slabs can also be used as cover for roofs of septic tanks, water tanks and low cost toilets.

The project has been recognized as the best invention of the year 2021 by the Karnataka State Science and Technology Committee, and the college has applied for a patent for the invention.

There is no dearth of creative minds in the country and these three students of Vidyavardhana College of Engineering, Mysore have proved it. To build an eco-friendly and low-cost home, students have demonstrated how bamboo can replace steel. The students made a circular shell out of bamboo which they first turned into a net. This was then used to make slabs that would be used in the construction of buildings. According to the students, laboratory tests found that the slabs are capable of sustaining a weight of 700 kg. Nishant, Mahindra Halmandge and Karthik MP from the Department of Civil Engineering came up with this wonderfully innovative use of locally available bamboo in place of steel. The fact that 2.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide is released into the air to produce one tonne of steel also makes the method eco-friendly, The Indian Express quoted Nishant as saying.

Dr Umesha PK, under whose guidance the three students initiated the innovative project, said, “The shell used is lightweight, which makes it not only low-cost but also low-maintenance, weather-proof, economical and corrosion resistant. makes.” Umesha also said that the shell was resistant to earthquakes and that the invention would be a big boost for bamboo cultivation. This development could significantly reduce the composition of carbon dioxide in the air, leading to more sustainable development. Additionally, according to the students, these bamboo slabs can also be used as cover for roofs of septic tanks, water tanks and low cost toilets. The project has been recognized as the best invention of the year 2021 by the Karnataka State Science and Technology Committee, and the college has applied for a patent for the invention. The rising cost of construction material has been a growing problem for the middle class and using bamboo for a single storey building can prove to be really economical.
