Mangaluru : Six months after the headscarf controversy first began, the shawl controversy with the hijab continues in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
Five days after six students were suspended and 12 others sent back home at the Government First Class College in Uppinangadi taluk for violating hijab rules, a group of Hindu students wearing saffron shawls came to protest at the college on Thursday.
He alleged that Muslim girl students continue to violate the college dress code by wrapping themselves in two shawls, and later they change one shawl into a hijab and cover it with the other.
The principal of the college, Shekhra MD, has denied the allegation.

He told TOI that some Muslim students were wearing two shawls, but they did not wear hijab inside the class. Following the complaints, he said that he had summoned the students and asked them to strictly follow the rules. On Wednesday, after class hours, two groups of students clashed over the issue of double shawls, and police reportedly alerted the college that some students may come wearing saffron shawls. Some journalists who had gone to cover it, some angry students forcibly locked them in a room. Their cameras were snatched and the video footage was removed. The Journalists’ Association has submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police. A case has been registered against 25 students.
At Mangaluru University College near Hampanakatta, tension prevailed as the college principal on Thursday sent back 16 girl students wearing hijab and demanded that they be allowed to attend classes. Earlier, the students had gone to the district commissioner’s office and complained about not being allowed to attend classes wearing hijabs. The DC had advised him to follow the rules of the government and the order of the court. However, the students did not agree and came to the college wearing hijab.
