Kovid-19: 10,649 new infections occur in India, active cases come down to 96,442

India has reported 10,649 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country’s cumulative caseload to 4,43,68,195, according to Union Health Ministry data on Wednesday.

Currently, the country’s active caseload is below the one lakh mark, i.e. 96,442 infections. The health ministry said active cases comprise 0.22 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.59%.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 2.62% and the weekly positivity rate was 3.32%.

A total of 4,37,44,301 have been cured of coronavirus infection in the country since the start of the pandemic, which includes 10,677 recoveries recorded in a 24-hour period.

According to the ministry, 210.58 crore doses of Kovid vaccines have been given in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

So far, the Central Government has provided 200.21 crore (2,00,21,66,975) COVID-19 vaccine doses to the States/UTs, out of which 6.16 crore (6,16,38,660) unused doses are still available with them. Huh.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed 20 lakh on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It had crossed 60 lakhs on 28 September, 70 lakhs on October. It crossed the 80 lakh mark on 11, 29 October, 90 lakh on 20 November and one crore on 19 December.

A new study on Kovid-19

A new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has linked daily physical activity with a lower risk of COVID-19 infection and severity, including hospitalization and death.

Interestingly, studies show that 150 minutes of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity counts weekly, physical activity provides the best protection.

It is important to note that while the link between regular physical activity and COVID-19 severity is poorly understood, the researchers noted that it likely involves both metabolic and environmental factors. Researchers set out to try and determine the extent of physical activity needed to reduce the risk of infection and associated hospital admissions and death.

The report highlights that those who worked had a 36% lower risk of hospitalization, a 44% lower risk of severe COVID-19 illness, and more than those who were physically inactive. There was a 43% lower risk of death from Covid-19. The maximum protective effect occurred at approximately 500 Metabolic Equivalent Work (MET) minutes a week, with no further improvement after that.
