Kovid vaccination, booster dose for children: PM Modi’s big announcements

Amid the growth of Omicrons in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the nation today announced that the country will start another immunization program to vaccinate children in the age group of 15-18 from January 3, 2022.

He also said that citizens above 60 years of age with co-morbidities will also have the option of taking a “precautionary dose” of the vaccine on the advice of their doctor. “This too will be available from January 10,” the prime minister said.

The Prime Minister said that healthcare and frontline workers have made a huge contribution in keeping the country safe in the fight against COVID-19. Therefore, as a precaution, the government has decided that a precautionary dose of the vaccine will be started for healthcare and frontline workers as well. It will be started from January 10.”

“Many people have also been found infected with Omicron in India. I would urge all of you not to panic, be careful and be alert. Masks and occasional hand washing, remember these things,” he said.

He said that till now more than 61 percent of India’s adult population has received both the doses of the vaccine. Also, about 90 percent of the adult population has received a single dose of the vaccine.

The Prime Minister said that the experience of fighting the corona virus global pandemic so far shows that following all the guidelines at the individual level is a great weapon to fight the virus. “And the second weapon is vaccination,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcements come after Bharat Biotech’s COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) today for emergency use for children aged 12-18 years, The report states. Earlier, Bharat Biotech submitted data from clinical trials for COVAXIN (BBV152) in the age group of 2-18 years to the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO).

According to the Union Health Ministry, India has registered 7,189 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The case tally of the Omicron variant of the corona virus has reached 415 across the country.
