Lakhimpur violence: Priyanka leads ‘Silent Protest’ demanding removal of Union Minister

A party spokesperson said the Congressmen sat on a ‘void of silence’ in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, demanding the sacking of the Union minister. The spokesperson said that Congress workers and leaders, including State President Ajay Kumar Lallu, Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra, Legislative Council leader Deepak Singh, gathered at the GPO Park here and later Priyanka Gandhi joined them.

The party has demanded the minister’s sacking to ensure a free and fair probe into the matter. Addressing a rally in Varanasi on Sunday, Priyanka Gandhi had said, “Congress workers are not afraid of anyone, even if you put them in jail or beat them up.” We will keep fighting till the Union Minister resigns. Our party has fought for the independence of the country. No one can silence us.”

UP minister Siddharth Nath Singh, however, said that the law will take its own course and will not be affected by any kind of pressure. Singh said that if Congress leaders want to sit on a ‘maun vrat’ or protest, it is their democratic right.

Taking a jibe at Manmohan Singh, the UP government spokesperson said that a prime minister was observing ‘maun vrat’ for 10 years. Singh asked why protests were not held in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, where Dalits and farmers were allegedly being persecuted.
