Kanpur: A lawyer was allegedly shot dead during elections Kanpur Badi Association (KBA) demonstrated in the district court premises on Friday. Police said the lawyer, identified as Gautam Dutt, received serious bullet injuries and was taken to Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital, where he died during treatment.
During preliminary investigation, it emerged that soon after the election was canceled following chaos and clashes, two groups of advocates opened fire indiscriminately outside the Shatabdi Gate of the court complex.
“In the firing, advocate Gautam was shot. He was admitted to LLR Hospital, where he died during treatment.
Meanwhile, as soon as the news of the death of the advocate spread, the lawyers created a ruckus and demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the firing.
Heavy police force and senior officials reached LLR Hospital to maintain law and order.
“Lawyer Gautam Dutt, who was shot, succumbed to his injuries at LLR Hospital. At present we are in the process of registering the FIR. no one is above the law. Speaking to reporters, Commissioner of Police Asim Kumar Arun said, “The culprits will be arrested.”
“However, it is yet to be ascertained whether the firing incident was related to cancellation of elections or it was a separate issue. Investigation is going on in this regard,” the police further said.
Earlier, after the chaos during the voting, the elderly committee canceled the KBA election on Friday.
Committee member Shankar Dutt Tripathi announced on Friday evening that the committee has decided to cancel the election due to gross violation of rules and regulations by the candidates and their supporters contesting the polls at the booths. He said that the new date for the election has not been decided yet.
Polling started with a delay of about two and a half hours and was closed at 4 pm after the committee received information about the chaos in the booths located at the District Court Building. The committee somehow picked up the ballot boxes from the booths and brought them to their rooms. The candidate and his supporters also reached there and amidst heated debate, the committee announced the cancellation of the election, due to which some people opened fire.
Voting, which was scheduled for Friday, could not start on time due to disturbances by some people, including candidates, who alleged that the voting process was not managed properly and CCTV cameras were not installed at proper and vulnerable places. Were.

The candidates and their supporters not only blocked the lane leading to the booths but also forcibly entered them. When the Assistant Returning Officers tried to remove them, they started committing indecency. In the evening at the booths of the court building, the situation worsened after which the committee stopped voting and brought the ballot boxes back to their rooms.
Some candidates and their supporters threw dust in the room of the Elder Committee and blamed the Assistant Returning Officer and the members of the committee for the disturbance.
After the announcement of the cancellation of the election, two groups of advocates clashed inside the court premises and one group opened fire on the other. According to sources, Gautam was shot and taken to LLR Hospital.
Terming the incident as unfortunate, the committee members said that such incidents tarnish the image of the advocates.
