United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 152nd anniversary, saying the world should heed his message of peace and usher in a new era of trust and tolerance.
“Hatred, Partition and Struggle have had their day. It is time to usher in a new era of peace, trust and tolerance. On this International Day of Nonviolence – Gandhi’s birthday – let’s heed his message of peace, and build Commit to a better future for all,” Mr Guterres tweeted, a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar city of Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi or Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi adopted a non-violent resistance and was at the forefront of the freedom struggle against colonial British rule with utmost patience.
This prompted India to finally achieve its independence in 1947. Known as Bapu, his unwavering belief in ‘Swaraj’ (self-rule) and ‘Ahimsa’ (non-violence) earned him worldwide acclaim.
Globally, Gandhi’s birth anniversary is celebrated as the International Day of Nonviolence. Several events were organized in India and across the world to mark the occasion.
