on Telangana

The report, “Telangana to Twin-Engine Government: PM” (page 1, July 4), is of course categorically acknowledged by the Prime Minister himself that opposition-ruled states do not get the same support as National Democratic Alliance-ruled states Such a statement is not only against federalism, which has been recognized as a basic feature of our Constitution, but also exposes the hollowness of the leader’s call for cooperative federalism.

Worse yet, such statements clearly have an undue influence on voters in poll-bound states, undermining the need for free and fair elections.

course and caution

Private universities in Karnataka have started introducing new courses and subjects, the justification being that they are more relevant to the current job scenario (“Private universities introduce new courses and subjects, July 4)). First, These courses are offshoots of the existing curriculum. When most of the colleges lack quality teachers in the basic curriculum itself, where will the colleges find qualified and experienced teachers for these courses?

It only seems to be a ploy by these universities to generate more revenue at the cost of quality. Parents have an obligation not to let their children be misled by such courses and claims.

getting rid of rabies

The unexpected death of a girl student from rabies in Palakkad is shocking. After this incident, now some voices are being raised that all stray dogs should be slaughtered. This is not a solution. Instead, people should be more vigilant about the disease and vaccination procedures.

The municipal authorities should launch a massive campaign to vaccinate the animals at regular intervals. This should also be done in conjunction with dog sterilization programs. Stray animals should also be checked.

KA Solomon,

Alappuzha, Kerala

The problem of stray dogs is increasing day by day. Road accidents are not only caused by bad roads. Stray dogs have also become a potential danger especially for bikers. Another serious problem is that stray dogs are often not vaccinated and are a source of rabies. Stray dogs should be caught and kept in the shelter. They should also be vaccinated. The government needs to make a provision for a special fund for the care of dogs in shelters.
