”Light on karwa do”: Ashneer Grover’s hilarious plea for Mumbai’s Worli Sea Link

Twitter users agreed with his demand

Ashneer Grover, former MD and co-founder of BharatPe, is known for his witty and interesting posts on Twitter, which often leave users in splits. On Sunday, he made a funny tweet about Mumbai’s famous Bandra-Worli Sea Link and placed a demand. While he admired the beauty of the iconic sea link, he expressed his dissatisfaction over the fact that it remains unlit during the night.

He also drew parallels between the Worli Sea Link and the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, US, and pointed out that the Bay Bridge “comes alive at night just because of the lights”.

“Brother, get someone to turn on the lights on the cable of the Mumbai Sea Link. (Someone turns on the lights on the Mumbai Sea Link cable). It’s such a beauty – Which grandpa turns off the lights every night to save on the electricity bill? (Who Dada switches off the lights every night to save electricity),” he tweeted along with a picture of the Sea Link. Lights can be seen on both sides of the bridge in the picture but there were no lights on the cables.

He also hit out at the officials for trying to save electricity by switching off the lights. Twitter users agreed with his view and hoped that the authorities would heed their demand.

One user said, “I couldn’t agree more! The Mumbai Sea Link looks breathtaking, and it’s a shame it’s not lit up at night. I am sure it will look even better with the lights on. Hope someone heed your request soon!” Another commented, “I believe lighting is the most important part of any beautification, be it home, shop or city.”

A third added, ”Agreed. Mumbaikars have the right to ask for beautification after paying the toll on the sealink. The sea link should be decorated with colorful lights every evening.

However, some also pointed out the issue of light pollution and how it can be harmful to birds and animals. Another user wrote, “I think this is a phenomenon called light pollution, which highly affects birds and animals.” Yet another added, “It may go against the requirements of environmental sustainability.” . To make roads safe, the first requirement of lighting should be safety.

Inaugurated in 2009, the 5.6 km Bandra–Worli Sea Link Bridge connects the northern suburb of Bandra to Worli in south Mumbai. About 6000 people worked round the clock to build this engineering marvel.
