Liverpool will go ahead with a planned extension of the Anfield Road stand, with the official ground-breaking ceremony to be held next week, the Premier League side said on Wednesday.

The redevelopment of the stand will add 7,000 more seats to Anfield, bringing its total capacity to over 61,000 and making it the third largest stadium in the Premier League after Manchester United’s Old Trafford and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In June the club was given permission by Liverpool City Council to go ahead with its plans. They were also given the green light to organize six concerts and major events at the stadium for a period of five seasons.

Liverpool Managing Director Andy Hughes said, “We have been clear from the start … we need the cooperation of local residents to successfully navigate the complex planning landscape and make the project financially viable.”

“We needed certainty for the progress of this project and are now in a position to be able to move forward. We started this journey in 2014 and are grateful to everyone for their contribution.”

The redeveloped Enfield Road stand, which is likely to be ready for the 2023-24 season, is expected to create around 400 new match day roles.
