SSCB’s Lovepreet Singh and RSPB’s Gurdeep Singh, bronze medalists at last year’s Birmingham Commonwealth Games, won gold medals in men’s 109kg and +109kg respectively at the National Weightlifting Championships here on Saturday.

Lovepreet lifted a total of 343 with an effort of 155 in snatch and 188 in clean and jerk to beat Avinash by one kg to finish first. While Avinash finished first in the snatch with a lift of 162, he achieved a clean and jerk of 180 for a total of 342.

Lovepreet, who holds national records in all three categories, was not happy at all. “I should have done better. I wasn’t quite fit because my elbow swelled while going for the second lift in the snatch.”

Gurdeep, who holds all the three national records like Lovepreet, decided not to attempt his second and third attempts in clean and jerk after lifting 205kg in his first attempt. He had by then captured the gold with a total of 365. Vipan Kumar (351) and S Rudramayan (332) finished second and third.
