‘Maitri’ movie review: Harbhajan Singh becomes Tamil film hero in a dreary watch

The Harbhajan Singh and Losaliya-starrer is filled with college campus moments, but little attention has been paid to any of its content

If you are following former cricketer Harbhajan Singh on social media, you will know about his love for Tamil. He is constantly tweeting in Tamil, a language he loves dearly.

And now, he has become a Tamil film hero, in the story of the college campus Friendship. He plays a mechanical engineering student and is an integral part of the gang of all the boys out there. Enter Anita (Losalia), who continues to laugh and smile at her classes.

The boys get excited about the only female presence in the class, but thankfully there is no romance. But there are plenty of friendships, as the title suggests, and the entire first half is nothing but a collection of sequences that were probably written in a piece of paper: college students walking, college students chatting. Yes, college students laugh.

Friendship

  • Cast: Harbhajan Singh, Losaliya, Arjun
  • Directed by: John Paul Raj and Sham Surya
  • Story: A campus story about a group of friends and their journey

Just when we thought there would be more campus drama, Friendship turns into a different animal. A powerful politician comes in. A court case begins. How will this all end?

This genre-hopping may be novel for Harbhajan, but for us unsuspecting Tamil film audiences, Friendship A deserted watch with little attention to any material. The only clever aspect about the John Paul Raj and Sham Surya-directed scenes is that they mostly keep Harbhajan in a group of friends and don’t talk to him often (lip sync is very closed). Even a cricket match, when something else is going on, is randomly placed, is executed poorly; It looks like a computer game. Harbhajan’s debut in Tamil cinema is far from the crowd-pleasing six or a brilliant fiffer that the ace spinner might have been hoping for.
