Stating that the JNU campus remains “inaccessible” for Persons with Disabilities (PWD), all India The Students’ Union (AISA) on Thursday urged Vice-Chancellor Shantisree Dhulipudi Pandit to resolve the long-pending issue. In a letter to Pandit, AISA mentions an incident in which a wheelchair-bound student fell on the road behind the School of Social Sciences on June 22.

“Sourya Sood had repeatedly approached the Vice-Chancellor’s office regarding the lack of access at several places in the campus. However, the Vice-Chancellor has not yet acted on the issues raised by him,” claimed AISA. AISA said that it conducted a survey and it revealed that PWD students face many problems on campus.

“The JNU campus is still inaccessible for persons with disabilities. These issues become a hindrance in leading a dignified life and access to equal opportunities,” AISA said in the letter. Aisa said that some lifts in the School of International Studies-I do not go into the basement where the canteens are located and some prominent places like the Central Library and Stadium Road still do not have a touch path.

“The laptops that the library provides to students with special needs are very old. There is no provision of Braille newspaper even in the library,” the letter read. “The mess used to have a dedicated worker for PWD students but this too has been stopped. Also none of the tables in any hostel mess are wheelchair friendly.

AISA also claimed that the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) health center does not have any special staff to assist PWD students. AISA said that the PWD has no representation in the Campus Development Committee (CDC). It said, “JNU Administration should immediately take note and resolve the long pending issues of PWD students of the campus.”
