According to police prosecutor Sergeant Kate McKinley, the investigation cost the government and police force more than $25,000 and 100–200 hours of time.

Mr Ira reportedly left his home on New Year’s Eve, telling his partner he was going to meet a “financial person” in Dapto. Her partner received a late night text message from a sex worker claiming she had been abducted. The text message reportedly said that the kidnappers would release Mr Ira in the morning in exchange for his bike.

The text message reportedly said: “‘[Partner] its ‘[name]’ Thanks for sending Paul to me, now payback is now **** bye. But I’m going to be fair, okay, we’ll keep him with us until the morning when (sic) he gives us his bike we call it the square, no one’s touching it, my word I’ll fix you up.

Subsequently, according to reports, Mr Ira’s partner contacted police after receiving a text message from a sex worker who claimed Mr Ira had been abducted and held hostage for his $7,000 dirt bike. was taken.

Police immediately launched an investigation, searching through hours of CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses. However, during the investigation, Mr Ira was allegedly seen on camera entering his lover’s house with an overnight bag long before the texts were sent, the report said.

In a statement, police confirmed that Mr Ira had fabricated the story of his abduction. It was also revealed in court that the day after the alleged abduction Mr Ira phoned his father to say he would be dropped off in his car by his abductors.

Further investigation revealed that the calls were made from Dapto, not Wollongong where Mr Ira claimed to have been abducted.

Paul Ira’s mother, sister and partner were present during the court appearance. The case was described by the magistrate as “quite bizarre” and Mr Ira was granted bail. He is expected to return to court later this month.
