The stalemate means Liverpool are in fifth place, six points behind leaders Arsenal ahead of their visit to Manchester United on Sunday, while Everton are 14th without a win in their six matches.

Coming into the match after securing back-to-back home victories, Liverpool headed to Goodison, where they had not tasted defeat in the Premier League in 12 years, and were confident of further derby glory.

But even with the big-money season signing Nunez back up front, Liverpool were struggling to get going.

When he made an opening, Liverpool found England goalkeeper Pickford in inspired form, saving Nunez’s effort over the crossbar to save a pick from his first half stop.

Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp threw at the fourth attacker in Roberto Firmino for the second half, with Pickford saving three times in quick succession to deny the Brazilian.

The game started from there. Maupay should have broken the deadlock from close range, firing very close to Alisson, before the striker played a bigger role in the opening goal in the 69th minute than he thought.

Cody thought he had timed his arrival to perfection at back post for his first Everton goal, only to be decided offside in a tight call, much to the delight of fans.

As they did in their dramatic midweek win over Newcastle United, Liverpool thought they had snatched it to death, but Salah’s first attempt once again went straight out, with the superb Pickford touching it.

“It was a real derby, super intense and full of really great moments,” Klopp said. “I think we hit the post three times and there were some incredible saves from Pickford – wow, what can you do?
