Mangalore airport to be renamed Mangaluru airport from next month

An official Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) supplement has been published by the Airport Authority of India (AAI), which announces the change of city and airport name from Mangalore to Mangaluru by December 1.

As per the AIP supplement, the goal is to officially inform all the stakeholders about the name change of AIS (Aeronautical Information Service) products for Mangalore airport and Mangalore city.

It said the name of the airport has been changed from “Mangalore” airport to “Mangaluru International Airport, Mangaluru” and the name of the city has been changed to “Mangaluru”.

According to the AAI, the AIP is the fundamental aviation document, and its primary purpose is to meet international requirements for permanent aeronautical information exchange and the long-term, temporary changes required for air navigation.

The airport was given to the Adani Group in October 2020 to operate, manage and develop the airport by AAI for 50 years.

In April, Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) had become the second busiest airport in Karnataka for domestic and international travel requirements due to a steady increase in the number of passengers.

A total of 1,19,838 people were seen in October 2021, 1,16,423 in November, 1,38,369 in December and 92,012 in January 2022, 1,03,004 in February and 1,36,822 in March.

The volume of traffic was also increasing continuously.

MIA recorded 1,030 traffic movements in November, 1,232 in December, 1,004 in January and 903 in February, while October included general aviation, international and domestic flights.

With a total of 1,138 movements, the second highest number after December, movements in March made up for the decline in February.
