Review of Mili: Janhvi Kapoor’s survival thriller gives no goosebumps, a waste of talented actors

Janhvi Kapoor, Sunny Kaushal and Manoj Pahwa starrer Mili is now in theatres. Directed by Mathukutty Xavier and produced by Boney Kapoor, the film is a survival thriller with a very simple plot – a girl named Mili (played by Janhvi Kapoor) is locked inside the freezer of a food outlet where she works. So it finds a way to stay alive.

Although the plot of the film is very simple, but there are many flaws in its writing. First, when Millie gets stuck in the freezer, her phone is ringing. Her father (played by Manoj Pahwa) continues to call her but when she doesn’t answer, he files a missing person complaint. However, for the longest time no one even thought of tracking his mobile phone. Only around the climax of the film, Mili’s boyfriend aka Sameer (played by Sunny Kaushal) suggests that they should try to track down Mili’s phone.

The story of the film seems a bit stretched. Anyone watching the trailer would enter the movie hall and wait for Miley to be trapped in the freezer and watch the events that followed. However, a lot of time has been spent in presenting the father-daughter bond. Even though it is done beautifully it takes you away from the actual plot, wondering when the thriller will actually start!

The cast of the film has also been ruined. Janhvi Kapoor She is good at what she does but fails to bring anything extraordinary. Even when she’s stuck in a freezer and struggling to survive, there’s no scene that will leave you jaw-dropping or give you goosebumps. Manoj Pahwa is the one who is in every other film or show. Sunny Kaushal should have given more screen time too. However, it should also be noted that the fault lies not with the actors but with the script. It does not give any scope to the actors to experiment.

spoiler ALERT! Jackie Shroff is also making a special appearance in the film but just to beat and disappoint you. Yes, you read it right. In a barely-there 10-second cameo, Jackie acts only as a prisoner who is beaten up by a cop. Sheer waste of a talented actor!

The music also does not go with the theme of the film. For example, when Millie is locked inside the freezer, the music doesn’t make you sad for her. Rather happy.

Overall, Mili could have been a better film if the writers had worked a little harder on the script. You can go and watch it in theatres, but it is definitely not one of those movies that will leave its mark.
