Mayawati’s party demands 6-month ban on pre-poll survey for UP polls

Uttar Pradesh is expected to see a fierce, closely watched competition this time (Representational)

New Delhi:

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has appealed for a ban on pre-poll surveys by media outlets six months before state and general elections to ensure that voters remain free, fair and unaffected by “misleading” projections of their rights , which are “Sponsored Surveys”. to the Election Commission. With only months left for Uttar Pradesh to go to polls early next year, the party has exercised the jurisdiction of the Election Commission to issue guidelines to ensure that elections are “free and fair”.

The party said it was “shocked by a pre-poll survey” aired by a news outlet in September, which claimed that the survey tried to lower the morale of BSP workers by “showing the ruling party in a very good light”. . According to the report, the BJP was shown to “get more than 40% of the vote share” which is going to be even higher than the 2017 vote share.

Mayawati’s party said in the letter, “The alleged survey was shown to be mischievous and with a premeditated intention to mislead the voters in Uttar Pradesh.”

The letter alleged that the prediction was based on “interviews of a few thousand people against UP’s 15 crore voters” and was “completely baseless”.

The letter further alleged that the agency conducting the survey for the channel was earlier “caught in a sting operation”.

In the 11-page letter, the BSP has also cited the results of exit polls and opinion polls aired by various national news channels ahead of the 2021 Bengal assembly elections.

While many had predicted that the BJP would win the state, the actual result surprised everyone. The party said, “Different agencies have predicted vastly different pre-election and exit poll data, which allegedly based on surveys of voters from the same state and forming their own opinion for the same election, And the actual results show completely different results,” the party said.

India’s most populous and politically important state, Uttar Pradesh, is expected to see a fierce, closely watched contest this time between other entrants like the ruling BJP, Samajwadi Party, BSP, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party.
