Meet Justice LN Rao, a retired SC judge who acted in a film before becoming a lawyer

Justice L Nageswara Rao, who is set to retire as a Supreme Court judge on June 7, has acted in several films including Sanjay Dutt starrer Kanoon Apna Apna. Senior advocate Pradeep Rai disclosed this while addressing the farewell function of Justice L Nageswara Rao.

Responding to this, Justice Rao shared his experience during his brief acting stint and said that he does not want to become an actor.

“I was into theater when I was in college. My cousin was a director and so he had a small role in a movie. That’s it. I didn’t want to be an actor. Lawyers work in court and so do judges. When there’s some heat we try to strike a deal between the lawyers. Acting is a part of the profession. I sometimes ask lawyers ‘are you like that and then I saw the two of them going to the coffee shop together,’ Justice Rao said.

Rai also said that the outgoing judge of the Supreme Court is a multi-talented personality, he is also a very good cricketer. He said that cricket is his passion and even when he works, he switches on TV to watch IPL matches.

Separately, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana called Rao’s retirement a great loss to the bench and his keen analytical skills and passion for justice will be missed completely.

CJI Raman has been instrumental in interpreting the law and interpreting the Constitution.

Attorney General KK Venugopal praised Justice Rao for accepting the judge’s motion and said he was one of the few who was ready to give up all his assets.

“He has given 163” Decision and has been part of 552 benches. It does not seem that Justice Rao cannot succeed. Considering his successful practice, taking judgeship is not an easy decision. It’s a test of one’s strength of character.”

Justice LN Rao was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on May 13, 2016. He is seventh in the history of the apex court and was directly promoted from the bar.

Hailing from Chirala in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, Justice Rao studied law at Nagarjuna University in Guntur and enrolled as an advocate in the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh in 1982.

After practicing law at the Guntur District Court for two years, he shifted to the Andhra Pradesh High Court and remained there till December 1994.

From January 1995 to May 2016, he practiced as an advocate in the Supreme Court and became a Senior Advocate and then Additional Solicitor General.
