Mobile Theft Case Investigation Leads Police To Illegal Phone Exchange, 2 Arrested Thane News – Times of India

Thane: Police were probing mobile phone snatching while busting an illegal telephone exchange operating from a shop in Bhiwandi. Two people operating the exchange have been arrested.
The accused have been identified as Shoaib Ansari (24) and Momin Ta Imtiaz (19), both residents of Gauripada in Bhiwandi.
Police said this could be just the tip of the iceberg of a well-organized racket.

He said that both the accused were a little careful, due to which the shop was searched and it was found that it was an illegal telephone exchange.
Police have recovered 195 SIM cards, Wi-Fi router, a laptop and SIM box.
The accused of illegal telephone exchange used the set-up to convert incoming international calls into normal voice calls by using Voice over Internet Protocol technology which is against DoT norms. Rathod said it then routed the regular ISD calls through VoIP calls using the internet connection in the SIM box, after which these calls were transferred to the cellphone users.
Police said they suspect the exchange was being used for anti-social activities and further investigation is on.
Telephone exchanges have resulted in loss of revenue to cellphone network providers and the government. An official said the amount of loss is yet to be calculated on the basis of call duration and total calls made. —Nishikant Karlikari
