Monaco SAC coach Nico Kovac: sources close to the club

A source close to the club told AFP on Thursday that French Ligue 1 side Monaco has sacked coach Nico Kovac. Former Bayern Munich boss Kovac took over the under-performing French side in July 2020 on a three-year contract from Robert Moreno with the option of another year.

The princely side finished third last season but were eliminated early in the Champions League and the French are sixth in the table, 17 points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

There were also reports of tension between members of the team, including the 50-year-old former Croatia midfielder and captain Wissam Ben Yedder.

Kovac led Bundesliga giants Bayern to a league and cup double in 2019, having previously coached Eintracht Frankfurt and the Croatia national team.

Monaco will take on second-tier Cavilli-Rouen in the last 32 of the French Cup on Sunday.
