Nearly 96 percent voter turnout in congressional presidential elections; No adverse event reported: Mistry

The party’s Central Election Authority chairman Madhusudan Mistry said on Monday that nearly 9,500 of the total 9,900 voters cast their votes in the Congress’ presidential election. In a press conference after voting ended in the Mallikarjun Kharge vs Shashi Tharoor contest, he said the overall turnout was around 96 per cent and in smaller states it was almost 100 per cent.

Mistry said the turnout was over 90 per cent across all the places, this was provisional data. “The most satisfactory thing for us was that in all the states where polling stations were set up, there were no adverse incidents. This is a great achievement…the elections were held in an open process in a peaceful manner.”

“The Congress party has shown what internal democracy is and other parties who want to learn from it can do so,” he said. Mistry said one should not have any apprehension as it is a secret ballot and no one will know who voted for whom.

He said the ballot boxes would reach by Tuesday evening and they would be mixed thoroughly before the counting of votes began. He said that three ballot boxes have been received, two from Delhi state and one from AICC headquarters.

Mistry said 87 delegates cast their votes at the party headquarters here. Asked about the election of the Congress Working Committee, Mistry said it depends on the next president and the Congress plenary session.

“When the plenary meeting takes place, if it decides on the election of the CWC, there will be elections. But the President has to take a decision on the CWC as well as the CEC (Central Election Committee) but I am not in a position to comment on it today. Kharge is considered a favorite for his alleged closeness to the Gandhi family and the support of senior leaders, even as Tharoor has projected himself as a candidate for change.
