The construction of the Tori-Shivpur-Kathautia railway line in Jharkhand will help reduce coal extraction capacity by about 125 million tonnes (MT) and transport of dry fuel via road, an official statement said on Wednesday.

The Tori-Shivpur-Kathautia coal evacuation rail project – envisaged by the Ministry of Coal under PM Gatishakti National Master Plan – is expected to be completed by March 2023. This project will connect North Karanpura Coalfield in Jharkhand.

The North Karanpura Coalfield, which comes under the administrative control of Coal India arm Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), has a fuel resource of about 19 billion tonnes.

Out of the total estimated coal production of around 135 MT by FY25, about 85 MT is expected to be produced from North Karanpura Coalfield.

Presently, coal produced in North Karanpura is transported through the Barkakana-Daltonganj railway line of the East Central Railway, which connects Gomoh and Dehri-on-Sone via the Barkakana loop.

In addition, a 44.37 km Tori-Shivpur double railway line has been constructed by the Coal India branch.

“The development of the third line on the same alignment is under construction at an additional capital of Rs 894 crore, which is likely to be commissioned by May 2023,” the coal ministry said in a statement.

In addition, a 49-km new rail line – Shivpur-Kathautia – has been envisaged and is being constructed through a project-specific special purpose vehicle, which will extend to the trunk railway line from Howrah to Delhi via Koderma. Will provide another exit for coal extraction. ,
