nirmal chaudhary elected president of rajasthan university students union

Nirmal Choudhary was elected as the president of Rajasthan University Students’ Union in Jaipur on Saturday, defeating his nearest rival Niharika Jorwal, another independent, by a margin of over 1,400 votes.

Jorwal is the daughter of state minister Murari Meena, who is considered close to former deputy chief minister and senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot. He contested as an independent candidate after being denied a ticket by the National Students’ Union. India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress.

Choudhary got 4,043 votes while Jorwal got 2,576 votes. NSUI candidate Ritu Barala came third with 2,010 votes and Narendra Yadav of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) came fourth with 988 votes. Interestingly, during the Rajasthan University Students’ Union elections, the candidates sought votes by lying on the road and holding their feet. After the declaration of the results, the members of the panel were administered the oath. Speaking to reporters, Choudhary said that several conspiracies were hatched by his rivals to ensure his defeat, but the students voted in his favour.

He said that he would submit a report card of his performance in a month. The results of student union elections in other universities and their constituent colleges of the state were also declared on Saturday.

Former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said that eight ABVP candidates were elected president in the state universities elections, while the NSUI could not secure a post in any university. “Seven candidates of ABVP have been elected president in the students union elections in Rajasthan universities, while NSUI has not got a single president post.

He said, “Chhatra Shakti has expressed the anger of the people suffering from the misrule of the Congress in the state. If the state government wants, it can see the mirror,” the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said in a statement.
