The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday said no proposal to ban ‘hijab’ in educational institutions in the state was under consideration, even as state school education minister Inder Singh Parmar, who criticized the ‘hijab’ ban. supported and proposed a dress code. The schools said his statement had been “misinterpreted”.

There is no controversy over wearing ‘hijab’ in Madhya Pradesh. “There is no proposal under consideration with the state government regarding the hijab ban. Asked about further protests against wearing hijab in Karnataka, Mishra said the matter pertains to Karnataka which is pending in the High Court there. Further protests against the ‘hijab’ in colleges in different parts of Karnataka intensified after the state government last week made it mandatory for its students in schools and pre-university colleges across the state to manage prescribed uniforms or private institutions. .

Speaking on the campus unrest in parts of Karnataka, BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, who hails from Indore, said on Wednesday that schools are meant to gain knowledge and not spread religious bigotry. “An attempt is being made to spread religious frenzy by insisting on wearing hijab in schools in Karnataka, it is unfair. A school has its own dress code and should be strictly followed, tweeted Vijayvargiya. Meanwhile, Parmar issued a video statement saying that his remarks about uniforms in schools were related to “uniformity, discipline and identity of schools”. A day earlier, Parmar had said that “Since hijab is not a part of the uniform, I feel it should be banned.

He had said that the school education department is working to implement a dress code in schools in Madhya Pradesh to ensure that there is a sense of equality and discipline among all students. “It will be implemented from the next (academic) session,” Parmar told reporters. On Wednesday he said,

“Some people misinterpreted my comment and presented it with the wrong context. I am denying this. We are not going to introduce any new uniform code. No work is being done in this direction. The existing system in schools regarding uniforms will continue.”

Parmar had also alleged that “systematic efforts” were being made to disturb the country’s environment over the issue of wearing ‘hijab’. Asked whether wearing ‘hijab’ would be banned in educational institutions in Madhya Pradesh, the minister had said, “If it (wearing hijab) happens, it (ban) will be brought here as well. We will take action accordingly.” Congress MLA from Bhopal (Central) Arif Masood had said that he would oppose any attempt (ban on wearing hijab) in Madhya Pradesh.
