UP polls: Unnao rape survivor’s mother confident of victory as Congress candidate

The rape victim’s mother Asha Singh, who won the legal battle against former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, said she is contesting the election to ensure justice for the victims of such a heinous crime.

The rape victim, who is campaigning for her mother, said, “Priyanka Gandhi wanted me to contest elections but it could not happen because I am not 25 years old. So she gave ticket to my mother.” He hoped that people would understand his pain and send his mother to the assembly.

Singh questioned the law and order situation in the state and said that crimes against women would stop only when the scenario improved. “Only then, no man, no matter how strong, can look at a woman with bad intentions. Our effort will be to ensure this after winning the election,” he told PTI.

Pankaj Gupta, who represents Unnao Sadar in the assembly, has been fielded by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the Samajwadi Party (SP) has fielded Abhinav Kumar. The rape victim and her mother, who were campaigning in Thana village, seven kilometers from the Unnao district headquarters, were surrounded by security personnel.

Apart from local Congress workers, people from the party’s Madhya Pradesh unit are also engaged in campaigning along with two women who are going door-to-door seeking votes. Local resident Renu Devi said that people are impressed by the respect Priyanka Gandhi has given to the mother of the rape victim.

Singh fought a long battle to get justice for his daughter. He secured a life sentence for Sengar, who was a BJP MLA from Bangarmau. The Congress candidate said, “What happened to my daughter should not happen to any daughter or sister. If I win the election, I will be the voice of the weaker section. I joined politics to get them justice.”

He said that he is getting a lot of support from the people, especially women. Since Singh is not educated, his daughter and sister are also participating in the election campaign with him.

Talking to PTI, the rape victim said, “Priyanka Gandhi understood our pain and gave us an opportunity to join politics.” When asked about this tragic incident, the class 11 student said, “The man who I had to face a lot of harassment for putting her behind the bars. On June 4, 2017, the rape victim, who was still a minor, had gone to meet Sengar for a job. A few days later, she complained that the MLA had raped her. The police took up the matter after the court’s order. The family of the rape victim continued to receive threats even after the case was registered but they did not give up in their search for justice.

The investigation of the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in April 2018. After the incident sparked nationwide outrage, the BJP expelled Sengar from the party. On 19 December 2019, Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court sentenced Sengar to life imprisonment for rape.

Following his conviction, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly canceled Sengar’s membership and declared the Bangarmau seat vacant. Shrikant Katiyar of BJP won the seat in the by-election held in November 2020.
