London: ninth seed Cameron Norrie hoisted the British flag on Wimbledon Entering her first Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 win over the American on Sunday tommy paul,
Left-handed Nori is the only local hope to survive the grasscourt major and will face Belgium for a place in Friday’s semi-finals. David Goffinwho previously seeded American 23rd Francis Tiafo 7-6(3), 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
Paul, seeded 30, had defeated a left-hander in each of his last three rounds, but failed to sabotage Nori’s precise delivery and subdue his opponent’s precise forehand in the frenzied atmosphere on Court One. Failed to find solution.
Nori took the lead by breaking Paul’s delivery in the opening game, and then saved four break points on his serve in the sixth game, putting his nose forward and getting the first set.
Swinging his racket from hand to hand while receiving the serve, the 25-year-old American found no way to break into Nori’s delivery, but looked overall more aggressive as he hit the net more often.
But Nori’s huge forehand was up to the challenge and Paul’s net return gave him a break of serve in the third game of the second set. Paul again had two chances to get back on the set but the Briton saved both for a 4-2 lead.
With Nori serving 5-4, the American eventually managed to convert a breakpoint, only to the delight of the partisan crowd, breaking back immediately to return the lead.
The third set followed a similar script, with Norrie once again getting an early break of serve in the third game and the 26-year-old converting his first matchpoint when Paul pulled a forehand wide.
