Many exit polls predict hung assembly in Tripura and Meghalaya, though NDA will be the biggest block

Asserting that there will be no hung assembly in Tripura, Nagaland or Meghalaya, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the NDA will form government with absolute majority in all the three northeastern states.

NEDA convenor Sarma said none of the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) partners will forge an alliance with the Congress or the Trinamool Congress after the results are declared on Thursday.

“There will be no hung assembly. NDA will form government in all the three states.”

Several exit polls have predicted a hung assembly in Tripura and Meghalaya, though the NDA will be the biggest block.

Election surveys only in Nagaland have predicted NDA to return to power with absolute majority.

Asked about the chief ministerial candidates in the three states, Sarma said status quo would remain in Tripura and Nagaland.

“Tripura will have a BJP CM, while we are in a coalition government in Nagaland,” said the convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), the regional wing of the NDA.

He said the chief minister would be decided after considering the number of states won by the BJP in Meghalaya.

“However, there will be no alliance with TMC and Congress in any state,” Sarma said.

Currently, Tripura has a BJP chief minister, while the governments in Nagaland and Meghalaya are led by the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the National People’s Party (NPP), respectively.

Elections were held in Tripura on 16 February and in Nagaland and Meghalaya on 27 February. The results will be declared on March 2.
