While the AIMIM, Congress and CPM on Thursday attacked Banerjee for what she saw as opportunism, the BJP said it did not need a certificate from her. Instead of commenting on his left-handed praise, the RSS pointed to Bengal’s record of political violence and called for corrective measures.
The sharpest attack was by Hyderabad-based All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who said on Thursday that “even in 2003, he had called the RSS a ‘patriot’, (and) in turn a Rashtriya Swayamsevak. The Sangh called her Durga.”
The RSS, whose ties with TMC chief Banerjee were the subject of political speculation, chose to ignore the praise and urged her to stop the cycle of political violence in the state.
“He has said that there are some good people in the RSS. We want to tell them that there may be political differences, but does it mean (political activists myself included) killing opponents,” said RSS state general secretary Jishnu Basu.
“He should have ensured that law and order is maintained. She is the chief minister of those who voted for her and those who voted against her,” he said. BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh said, “We do not need a certificate from Mamata Banerjee about who is good and who is bad. It is for the public to decide. We are not accountable to him.
