Odisha MLA hurls SUV into crowd, 30 injured Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

BHUBANESWAR: Suspended BJD MLA Prashant Kumar Jagdev allegedly rammed his SUV into a mainly comprised crowd. BJP At least 10 people were injured by supporters in front of a block office in Khurda district.
The MLAs’ action invited retaliation which resulted in clashes between their supporters and rivals in which the MLA and 20 others were injured. Seven police personnel, including an inspector, were among the injured.
Inspector General of Police Narsingh Bhol told that the policemen present on the spot in Banapur block office, who gathered for the election of the President of Panchayat Samiti, tried to stop the MLA from going into the crowd. But he was in no mood to listen. After the incident, an angry mob dragged Jagdev from his vehicle (a Land Rover Discovery) and thrashed him. Their vehicles were also damaged.
Two-time MLA, Joe. have been selected from Chilka assembly constituency, was first taken to a local hospital and later shifted to Bhubaneswar. His condition is said to be stable.
Khurda SP Lekh Pahi said that seven policemen including Banapur police station in-charge Rashmi Ranjan Sahu were among the injured.
The incident drew a sharp reaction from the political parties. BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra said that BJD strongly condemns this barbaric act of MLA. “Violence has no place in a democracy and such a violent act is shocking and unfortunate. We are sure that the police and administration will take strictest action against the accused as per law.
Patra also reminded that the BJD had suspended Jagdev for his violent behaviour. The Naveen Patnaik-led party had suspended him in September last year for assaulting a Dalit BJP worker.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan condemned the behavior of the MLA. “It is unprecedented in Odisha that an MLA drives a vehicle with the intention of crushing innocent people and policemen on duty. I condemn the incident. The state administration should take the incident seriously and take action against it.”
Jagdev is known for his high rank. In August 2020, he allegedly assaulted a junior engineer working with the Chilka Development Authority. In 2018, he had publicly threatened a former sarpanch in the latter’s office, and in November 2016, he threw kerosene at a female tehsildar of Bolgada.
