Omicron causes fastest community transmission ever in South Africa

An advisor to the provincial government said that even though the Omicron variant is spreading faster than previous strains of the coronavirus in Gauteng, the South African epicenter of the outbreak, its impact will likely stem from previous infections.

Active cases in the province will likely be around 40,000 in the coming weeks, as opposed to more than 100,000 during the third wave in the middle of this year, adviser Bruce Melado said in a presentation on Thursday. Melado is a professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg who uses modeling to predict the trajectory of infection.

He said the chances of hospitalization due to Covid-19 would be around 4,000, compared to 9,500 in the third wave.
