For the fifth day in a row, there were protests at the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation office, with both the opposition parties – the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress holding separate protests demanding the resignation of Mayor Arya Rajendran. Name of Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] District secretary Anvoor Nagappan asked him for a ‘priority list’ of applicants for temporary posts in the health wing of the municipal corporation.

BJP councilors continued to occupy the corridors of the corporation and blocked the way to the mayor’s room. However, the mayor, in anticipation of a protest, had reached his office earlier in the day under police protection.

Congress protest

The Congress’s indefinite sit-in in front of the corporation office, demanding the resignation of the mayor, entered the second day as well.

Addressing the protest meeting, Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan accused Mr. Nagappan of playing the role of the head of the Employment Exchange. He said the issue is not limited to the corporation as thousands of backdoor appointments are being made in public sector units and local bodies, which will be disclosed by the Congress in the coming days.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President K. Sudhakaran said the Congress would consider calling off the protests if the mayor apologises. However, Mr Satisan later clarified that the party’s collective stance was that the mayor should resign.
