Officials said Delhiites consumed over one crore bottles of liquor worth over Rs 218 crore during the week-long celebration and partying from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve.
The national capital recorded the highest ever liquor sale of 20.30 lakh bottles on New Year’s Eve on December 31. A senior official of the Excise Department said on Monday that a consignment of liquor worth Rs 45.28 crore arrived in the city on the day of welcoming the New Year.
During December 24-31, a record 11 million bottles of various types of liquor, mostly whiskey, were sold in Delhi. He said the volume of liquor sales was Rs 218 crore.
Delhi is set to record an average sale of 13.8 lakh liquor bottles in December 2022, the best year-end sales in the last three years, official data shows.
Delhi government to earn Rs 560 crore revenue in December 2022 from liquor – excise duty and value added tax, data showed.
The sale of liquor in Delhi in the month of December is 12.55 lakh in 2019, 12.95 lakh in 2020 and 12.52 lakh in 2021 and 13.77 lakh in 2022.
At present, liquor is being sold in the city through about 550 liquor shops run by four Delhi government undertakings. It is also available at bars in over 900 hotels, pubs and restaurants across the city.
The Excise Department ended 2022 on a high note with record sales, although the year threw up several challenges for it, including a CBI probe into the implementation of the Excise Policy 2021-22 which was quashed by the government.
The department also got good returns in the form of excise revenue during the festive season including the sale of liquor on Diwali. During Diwali in October 2022, more than 48 lakh bottles worth over Rs 100 crore were sold in Delhi.
According to data from the Excise Department, 14.7 lakh bottles worth Rs 28.8 crore were sold in the city on December 24, 2022.
The lowest number of liquor bottles were sold in Delhi during the recent season on 27 December, with less than 11 lakh bottles worth Rs 19.3 crore bought by consumers.
